We recently discovered a fascinating video showing the traditional process of casting a church bell – from mould preparation through to the final pour.

For those of us who ring here at Woolhope, it’s especially interesting to reflect on how our own bells would once have been made using very similar techniques.

Woolhope’s church tower houses a ring of six bells, with the tenor weighing 13 cwt (over 650 kg). The 4th bell is the oldest, cast in Bristol between 1380 and 1420, while the newest, the 2nd, was cast in London in 1887. The lightest bell, dating from 1882, was made at the John Taylor Bell Foundry – the very place featured in the video below.

Whether you’re an experienced ringer or simply curious about how bells are made, we hope you’ll enjoy watching this.
